Wall Insulation Types

There are number of wall insulation types that are used in the construction stage of a residential or commercial building. The insulation you will require is dependent on the wall system and construction. For new buildings, insulation is mandatory and must comply with your Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) and the thermal requirements defined in your development application (DA).

Before deciding on the type of wall insulation you require, you must define what the R-Value requirement is and actual wall system that you have. The choices available to you include wall insulation batts, Sisalation and a broad range of air cell based products.

Kooltherm K8 Cavity Board

Kooltherm K8 Cavity Board is a super high performance, fibre-free rigid thermoset insulation suitable for Cavity Wall applications. It has a thermoset phenolic insulation core, sandwiched between two layers of reflective, low emissivity composite foil autohesively bonded to the insulation core during manufacture. This reflective, low emissivity surface improves the thermal resistance of any cavity adjacent to the board.

Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak is a 3-in-1 insulation, vapour barrier and thermal break solution for steel-framed construction. In steel-framed buildings, Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulbreak delivers the R0.20 thermal break required for NCC BCA compliance*, reducing thermal bridging and conductivity between building elements. It is also commonly used in non-steel framed applications such as timber framed roofs.

Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board is a super high performance, fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation, faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil, autohesively bonded to the insulation core during manufacture. This reflective surface improves the thermal resistance of any cavity adjacent to the board.

Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board is manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Polyester – Greenstuf Batts

Designed for the thermal insulation of timber-framed buildings. They come as insulation segments pre-cut to fit standard timber-framing Thermally molded into shape, they are designed to be self-supporting in walls and ceilings and require no stapling into place. GreenStuf® Thermal Batts are proudly made in Australia.

Tyvek – Breathable membrane for external walls

  • A micro-fibrous, highly breathable wall wrap used as an adjunct to bulk insulation in walls.
  • The tough structure of Tyvek® HomeWrap is engineered to create millions of extremely small pores that resist bulk water and air penetration whilst allowing water vapour to pass through.
  • Helps protect a home against damaging wind and rain that can penetrate through exterior cladding.
  • The unique structure of Tyvek® HomeWrap blocks excess water from entering into walls.
  • The Breathable structure of Tyvek® HomeWrap allows water vapour to pass through to facilitate drying in wall systems.


Earthwool® wall insulation is available for installation in both timber and metal framed premises. The timber frame insulation is available in R-Values from R1.5 to R3.1 and thickness up to 140mm. For metal frames you can choose from R1.5 to R2.0 up to 90mm thick. Earthwool® wall insulation is a glasswool, non-combustible, CFC/HCFC free and are highly durable, not promoting the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria.

ECOSE® Technology

Earthwool products made using ECOSE® Technology benefit from a binder which has no added formaldehyde and is based on renewable bio-based materials instead of traditional petroleum-based chemicals. The technology has been developed for Knauf Insulation’s glasswool and rock mineral wool products, enhancing our environmental credentials whilst maintaining the thermal, acoustic and fire performance and mechanical properties.

ECOSE Technology gives a distinctive new look to Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool products - a natural shade of earthy brown, with no added dyes, bleaches or artificial colours. Earthwool is also less dusty and has a much softer and friendlier feel whilst retaining its rigidity and stiffness properties. The ECOSE Technology binder is up to 70% less energy intensive than the formaldehyde binders used in traditional glasswool insulation. As there is no formaldehyde or phenol used in the manufacturing process for Earthwool, it also improves the indoor air quality of buildings where these products are installed (compared to conventional glasswool products).

StyReflex Aluminium Foil Board Insulation

Designed and developed by Foamex, StyReflex™ is a clean, lightweight, non-sagging, non-irritant foil insulation sheet. Made from expanded polystyrene which has been foil laminated, StyReflex is available in different degrees of thickness making it suitable for a variety of uses and specifications.

StyReflex insulation sheets are aluminium foil-faced Styroboard™ sheets allowing for greater R-values to be obtained in open and confined spaces.

StyReflex is very cost effective and will not deteriorate, collapse, or lose thermal values over time. Construction pplications include insulation for walls and ceilings, under concrete slabs (e.g. carparks), warehouses, and sheds.
